Mayor supports Kirkwood Hospice Lottery
Mary Harkin, Batley resident and ex- Mayor of Kirklees scoops the £750 Lottery Jackpot prize in a recent August draw. Mary, a member of the Hospice Lottery since July this year, along with daughter, Julie, talks to us about how she will spend her winnings and how you too can become a member.
What originally made you sign up to the Hospice Lottery?
You read about the Hospice and find out about the type of work that they do here and it makes you want to support a local charity.
Here, you know where your money is going. We had a friend, Margaret, who died and at her funeral her husband organised a collection in aid of Kirkwood Hospice. We also donated money in her memory from our Tuesday Tea in Batley, which Margaret was the leader of.
Is this your first win?
Yes. I was very surprised because I rarely win things, it’s never been something I’ve been lucky at. I might win a small raffle but I’ve never won anything as big as this!
How did you feel when your number was called?
I felt wonderful. I was quite amazed when I saw the £750.
Lucky Lottery Winner, Mary Harkin, with Kirkwood Hospice Community Services Manager, Andrew Gammon.
What will you spend your winnings on?
I haven’t quite made my mind up yet. There are a lot of things we could do and we have a lot of ideas. It could go into the home, we could have a holiday or a weekend away and me and my daughter could have lunch out for quite some time!
What would you say to anyone else thinking of joining the Kirkwood Lottery?
Go ahead! It’s a worthwhile, good cause that helps take care of local people in their last days. Try your best to support the Hospice, even if it’s only in a small way, and look what you can win!
