Improving access to care across Kirklees

The Kirkwood are determined to increase diversity and improve inclusion across our movement so that everyone in Kirklees understands how they might benefit from our services and believes that our services are here for everyone in need, irrespective of their background, beliefs, culture or identity.

When developing our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy, we created a series of statements which affirm our mission and values, set out why the Kirkwood are prioritising diversity and inclusion, and highlight how the charity will progress on this journey. These statements are shared below:

Our Mission

The Kirkwood exist to support anyone affected by any life limiting illness, every step of the way.

  • The Kirkwood are here for everyone in need. We offer our services to anyone who may benefit, regardless of their background, beliefs, culture or identity.
  • We see the person, not the illness. The Kirkwood prioritise personalised care that respects each patient's dignity and meets their unique needs.
  • Connection is key. Deeply understanding what matters most to each patient allows us to provide the best possible support.
  • Becoming more inclusive helps The Kirkwood's mission. By embracing all backgrounds and experiences, we truly fulfil our purpose of supporting everyone facing a life limiting illness.

Our Vision

A world where no-one needs to face a life limiting illness alone, and where everyone has access to the support they need to live the best quality life they can.

  • Every patient is an individual. We embrace their unique identities and strive to understand their specific needs.
  • Inclusion is our vision. We are committed to developing accessible services that create a sense of belonging for everyone in need.
  • Equity of care is at the heart of The Kirkwood. We are committed to addressing inequalities in care and we actively seek to engage with all communities. This is a crucial moment to make a positive difference.

How we will increase diversity and improve inclusion

  • We will build a more diverse movement, with a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
  • We will embed our core values, particularly "respect" and "inclusivity", into every aspect of our work. This clarity will guide our journey and inform our future communication with stakeholders.
  • We will support each other when we get things wrong. We will learn from our mistakes and encourage learning so we can all grow together.
