Trinity Children’s Centre helps officially open The Kirkwood’s new Kids Shop in Mirfield
Children and staff from Trinity Children's Centre in Mirfield helped The Kirkwood celebrate the official opening of its brand-new Kids Shop on Monday 2nd June, marking an exciting new chapter for the charity's growing retail operation.
The dedicated children's shop, located at 172 Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, is the first of its kind for The Kirkwood and offers families an extensive range of quality pre-loved children's clothing, toys, books, games, baby equipment and accessories. Every purchase made in the shop helps raise vital funds to support The Kirkwood's care for local people living with life limiting illnesses and their families across Kirklees.
To mark the occasion, children and staff from Trinity Children's Centre were invited along to cut the ribbon alongside Terry the T-Rex. The children explored the new store and were among the very first customers through the doors.
Trinity Children's Centre has been a valued part of the Mirfield community for more than 50 years. The centre provides childcare for children aged one and above, wraparound care for pupils attending three local schools and holiday club provision during school holidays. It is also highly recommended by Kirklees Council for supporting children with additional needs and their families.

Stacey, Toddler Room Leader at Trinity Children's Centre, said the centre was delighted to be involved in such a special occasion. "We have been running in Mirfield for over 50 years providing childcare for local families. We offer nursery places for children from one year old and also provide wraparound care for three local schools. We operate during the school holidays with our holiday club. I think it's brilliant that we have a charity shop completely dedicated to children run by The Kirkwood."
The children quickly made themselves at home in the new shop, excitedly browsing the shelves and discovering the wide range of toys, books and games available. Stacey continued: "We loved it. The children were all so excited to see all the toys and books available. We loved it that much we went to get the deputy manager to come and have a look and managed to purchase some new toys for our setting."
The opening of the Kids Shop has created a unique shopping destination in Mirfield, giving local families access to affordable, sustainable children's items while supporting a local charity: "I think it's brilliant," Stacey said. "All the staff said how lovely it was and they couldn't wait to come and have a nosey around."

The new shop forms part of The Kirkwood's continued investment in its retail operation, helping to generate income that supports the charity's specialist care services. By giving pre-loved children's items a second life, the shop also promotes sustainability and encourages families to shop more environmentally consciously. For Stacey and her colleagues, The Kirkwood's work extends far beyond the high street: "I think it's very important to have such an amazing hospice so local, with staff that are so dedicated to patients on end of life care. We actually have some staff members that The Kirkwood has played a huge part in their life."
The Kirkwood Kids Shop is now open and welcoming customers. The charity is also encouraging local people to volunteer their time to help out in the shop, whether that's sorting clothes, cleaning the shop keeping it tidy or serving customers. The Kirkwood would like to have some more volunteers for it's new venture. If you are interested please ask in the shop or contact our volunteering team.
Whether you're searching for your child's next favourite toy, updating a growing wardrobe or looking for a sustainable way to shop, every purchase made at The Kirkwood Kids Shop helps make a difference to local patients and families when they need it most.
