About Volunteering

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to find out more about volunteering with The Kirkwood. 

Volunteering has been a part of the fabric of The Kirkwood since the idea of a ‘Hospice for Kirklees’ was first conceived. Over the years, thousands of local people have offered their time and skills as volunteers, and The Kirkwood you see today is a testament to the fantastic contribution they have made.

Currently, around 800 volunteers dedicate a total of 120,000 hours each year, helping us to provide palliative care to local people with life limiting illnesses. But it doesn’t stop there! Our volunteers also provide additional support to families, friends and carers during their loved one’s illness and in bereavement. 

Everyone associated with The Kirkwood knows only too well the real difference our volunteers make to the running of our services, and it’s true to say…

Volunteering is set to become even more prominent within many areas of the care we provide, as well as in the support services and community-based activities that underpin it. 

The great thing is, volunteering with The Kirkwood is open to people of all ages and backgrounds. There’s a wide variety of roles on offer, which give The Kirkwood volunteers the opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives.

Whether at our In-Patient Unit site, in one of our 20 charity shops located across Kirklees, at a local event, or as a member of one of our community-based Support Groups – however you choose to donate your time, you can be sure that you’ll be making a big difference to the lives of local people who rely on our services.

A little of your time can make a massive difference to what we can achieve here at The Kirkwood!

And don’t forget, it’s not ‘all work and no play'! Volunteering with The Kirkwood gives you the chance to meet new people and make new friends, join in volunteer celebration events, socialise with other members of your team. And if you stay with us long enough, you’ll even pick up a long-service award.
