Garry Scott Marks 20th Business Anniversary with The Kirkwood Sponsorship

As the founder and owner of Garry Scott Groundworks, Landscaping and Maintenance, Garry has spent two decades transforming outdoor spaces across the region. Now, to mark his company's 20th anniversary, he is joining the Kirkwood Business Movement and coming on board as the official sponsor of The Kirkwood's upcoming Sunflower Memories appeal.

As part of the sponsorship, Garry has kindly donated thousands of sunflower seed packets to give to the charity's supporters, creating a poignant connection between his daily work in landscaping and his desire to give something back to the local community.

"We’ve been in business 20 years," Garry explains. "One of our celebrations, and the way that we want to celebrate being in business, is to thank the people and the community that have been there to support us throughout the whole 20 years. If it wasn't for people supporting us, we wouldn't still be here. And without charities like The Kirkwood, our community would miss out on vital care when they need it most. We're all here to help each other and our anniversary year is all about showing our appreciation."

Garry’s connection to The Kirkwood goes back many years, rooted in the care his own family received at the hospice's In-Patient Unit in Dalton. Like many local business owners, his first introduction to the charity came during a time of hardship.

"I didn't know anything about The Kirkwood until my aunty first arrived here," Garry says. "That's when I came down and visited her, and I started to learn just what happens down here."

Initially, Garry assumed the hospice only cared for cancer patients. However, after connecting with the fundraising team, he learned about the true breadth of The Kirkwood's care, including supporting people facing a wide range of life limiting illnesses across Kirklees - not just on the In-Patient Unit. It wasn't until a recent walk through the grounds, however, that Garry connected with the physical heart of the hospice: its gardens.

"I never went past that reception door when visiting," Garry reflects. "I went straight to see them; that was as far as I ever went. But we had a walk down here recently and saw the grounds. You can walk past all this and be totally oblivious to it all, but if you actually look round, you’ve got brand new life appearing. It gives everybody that lift. Just getting some fresh air is actually good, isn't it."

As a landscaper, Garry immediately noticed the therapeutic power of the environment - from the early snowdrops to the bird’s building nests. It’s this appreciation for outdoor spaces and human connection that has inspired him to go beyond a traditional financial sponsorship for the Sunflower Memories appeal this summer.

Garry wants to provide genuine 'person power' on the day, volunteering his time to help visitors and support the event.

"For me, it's more me walking around and asking, 'Does anybody want some help?'" Garry says.

By joining the Kirkwood Business Movement and backing the Sunflower Memories appeal, Garry Scott is proving that corporate responsibility is at its best when it is personal. For Garry, celebrating 20 years of success is entirely secondary to the real goal: supporting the incredible movement of care that looks after the people of Kirklees when they need it most.
