Answering the Call for Kirkwood

Red Telephone Box raises funds on behalf of Kirkwood Hospice after the care provided for father and husband, Michael John Clough.

Kirkwood Hospice had the privilege of caring for Michael John Clough in 2015. Michael was someone who had a passion for collecting unusual items and over the years amassed a treasure trove of odd and curious paraphernalia. This included a red telephone box, which took pride of place in his garden.

Michael found a novel use for the telephone box after he purchased it. He would use it to grow flowers in and became a local celebrity as people would often stop as they passed Michael’s garden to have a look at this intriguing telephone box.

After Michael died, his family wanted the telephone box to find a new home where it would continue to be cherished. The red telephone box has recently been sold and Michael’s family have very kindly donated the proceeds totalling £770 to Kirkwood Hospice in his memory.

Daughter, Annette, said “We have just sold Dad’s house and rather than leaving the telephone box in the garden, we decided to sell it so that it would continue to be appreciated in the way that Dad appreciated it.

"We made the decision to donate the proceeds of the sale to the Hospice because Dad received wonderful care at Kirkwood in 2015. Our entire family was extremely well looked after.

"We felt it would be fitting to use the money from Dad’s telephone box to help other families who need Kirkwood’s assistance.”

On behalf of everyone at Kirkwood Hospice, we would like to say a huge thank you to Michael’s family including his wife, Norma, for this extremely generous gift. Thank you, we are very grateful.
