Kirkwood’s retail shops compete to win the best dressed Christmas window

This December, our shops put on their festive hats as they competed to win the best dressed Christmas window display at Kirkwood. The festive displays are judged by Kirkwood patients and service users, with teams battling it out to be this year's winner.

Every year, the Kirkwood retail team hold a competition between the shops to showcase the most festive Christmas window displays in the villages around Kirklees, with all the festive goods donated by the local community.

The teams have one week to pull together their best dressed Christmas windows and send their entries in to be judged by Kirkwood patients and service users, to win first, second and third place.

Retail Area Manager, Amber McGillivary, said: “It’s a great way for the shops to showcase their creativity and compete with the other high street Christmas windows; it also shows the amazing Christmas stock that we get donated in.

“Quite often the volunteers will also get involved in either coming up with ideas or actually putting the window in so it brings the whole team together.”

Maggie Oddy and her team at the Marsden shop have created a strong contender with their display this year.

Maggie said: “The idea came from a meeting I had back in September with Seamus, Kirkwood’s Family Care Team Leader, and he asked us about the Hospice ethos. When I sat down with the shop bank staff to brainstorm the window display, it had put a seed in my mind.

 “The idea was to create a simple message for everybody by showcasing the words associated with Kirkwood and who we are, such as loyal, dignity and compassion.

“It’s sparked a lot of conversations about Kirkwood and our new campaign, Spread the Word. It’s been a really good way to send a nice positive message out to the public.”
