Kirkwood’s Annual Christmas Competition Winners

Local girls, Charlotte Thackray and Ava Wike, and winners of Kirkwood’s annual Share-A-Card competition will be the first to see Santa in his Grotto as they claim their prize this Christmas.

The vote is in for Kirkwood’s annual Share-A-Card competition and the winners, Charlotte Thackray and Ava Wike, get to claim their prize and be the first to see Santa at this year’s Christmas Grotto on Saturday 17th November.

Kirkwood Hospice runs the annual Share-A-Card campaign as a way for friends, family or colleagues to share season greetings in one A5 card. By placing the card in a communal place for everyone to see, the campaign is a great way to save time and money during the festive season.

Every year, Kirkwood holds a competition to design the front cover of the Share-A-Card Christmas card, which can be entered by children aged between five and 12.

Entries can be made using any material and Christmas design they like and two lucky winners are chosen to have their designs printed, as well as getting the chance to be the first to see Santa in his Christmas Grotto.

The Grottos are held at the Pennine and Birchencliffe Wyevale Garden Centres every weekend from Saturday 17th November until Christmas Eve, and all profits go to patient and family care at Kirkwood.

Staff and volunteers from the Fundraising Team at Kirkwood voted on this year’s designs to win the competition. This year’s winning entries were created by 10-year-old Charlotte Thackray and nine-year-old Ava Wike.

Charlotte is a pupil at Rowley Lane School and heard about the competition from the after school club called Reach that she attends.

Charlotte wanted to enter the competition this year for a very special reason.

She said: “I wanted to enter and have a chance to win because my Grandad died of cancer.”

Nine-year-old Ava from Kirkheaton Primary School was the second winner of the competition with her design of Santa falling down the chimney.

Ava’s mum, Hayley, said: “We saw the competition on Facebook one afternoon and thought it would be nice to draw some Christmas pictures.”

Ava added: “It looked like a fun thing to do so I went and got all my colouring stuff and it only took me half an hour!”
