Due’ Broccoli - The Family Favourite

Three years ago, local man, Riz Hussain, took a love of his mum’s home cooked recipes and turned it into a cookbook for all the family to treasure. By asking for donations for his creation, a recipe book called Due’ Broccoli, Riz has raised an amazing £1,000 for patient care at Kirkwood.

Ahead of Maria Hussain’s 80th Birthday three years ago, Riz decided to create a recipe book including some of her family favourite recipes for future generations to enjoy.

The cookbook began as a passion project for Riz and after three years of hard work along with the help of his good friend and publicist, Sue, the book is now complete.

Riz said: “The book is a tribute to my mum, Maria, for the fantastic food she feeds to the whole family. I just wanted to make sure these pleasures were passed on for all to share and enjoy.

“The name ‘Due’ Broccoli’ comes from something my late Uncle Tom would say to my Mum when he used to visit whilst travelling up and down the country.

”Upon entering the kitchen, he would proceed to lift the lid on all the pans to see what would excite his taste buds. Mum would say to her little brother ‘sit down and I’ll prepare something for you’, his response to which was ‘I’ll just have Due’ Broccoli’.”

With the book taking three years to perfect, many of his friends and family became eager to have a copy of the much loved recipes.

Riz said: “I only intended really to get maybe a dozen copies printed to give to my daughters, my sisters and my nieces and nephews so they have the recipes.

“Then all their families wanted one and people wanted to send them as gifts to others.”

Riz’s wife, Dianne Hussain, an employee of Kirkwood said: “Everybody wanted one, everyone kept asking and wanting to know when it was ready.”

From this, Riz then decided to ask for donations to raise money for Kirkwood. With a target of £500 in mind, Riz has now raised an amazing £1,000 for Kirkwood by selling around 150 copies.

With the book being so popular amongst his family, Riz is now looking towards book two and a whole new cuisine.

Riz recently visited Kirkwood for a cheque presentation with Community Fundraiser, Lyndsey Wroe.

Lyndsey said: “We really appreciate the fundraising Riz has done and would like to say a big thank you to him.

“After 30 years, we are so grateful that the majority of money Kirkwood gets still comes from the community.

“If it wasn’t for people like Riz, we wouldn’t be able to keep the Hospice going or continue to support people in Kirklees affected by a life limiting illness.”
