Sarah’s Wish for Kirkwood

Sarah Green of Mirfield lost her heroic battle with cancer in January 2018 aged just 44, having spent her final weeks at Kirkwood. Her final wish was for her family and friends to raise as much as possible for Kirkwood to help other families in the local community affected by life limiting illnesses. And that was when ‘Sarah’s Wish’ was born.

Sarah was a Mum and role model to Sam, Josh and Rebecca, a wife to Matt, a wonderful friend and all-round Wonder Woman with an infectious and beautiful smile.

With a loving and caring nature, and a passion for horses and dogs, everyone that met Sarah instantly loved and respected her.

After spending her final weeks in Kirkwood, surrounded by her family and friends, Sarah became aware of how much Kirkwood relied on the support of the local community.

Sarah asked a group of friends to leap in to action and raise as much as possible for Kirkwood so others could benefit in the same way her and her family had.

Nikki Horne and Kate Faulkner were friends of Sarah and are members of Sarah’s Wish committee. They said: “Sarah’s final weeks in Kirkwood were spent with dignity and love. Kirkwood gave Sarah that extra mile as they do with everyone.

“Kirkwood helped Sarah’s three children and Husband, Matt, prepare for what was unfortunately round the corner, and that support continued.”

Sarah’s family and friends were quick to start preparations for their first event to fundraise for Kirkwood.

On Saturday 9th June 2018, in their local community of Mirfield, the ‘Sarah’s Wish’ team held their very first Family Fun Day – raising an incredible £12,800!

Throughout the day, Battyeford Playing Fields were filled with crowds of people enjoying the inflatables, live entertainment, food and drink, a Dog Show and more!

Sarah's family and friends arranged for an Eddie Stobart Lorry named 'Sarah Elizabeth' in Sarah's honour.

The committee, which includes Sarah’s family and friends, were thrilled with how much they raised at their first event, and were pleased to present a cheque to the Kirkwood Team in the following weeks.

After this event, ‘Sarah’s Wish’ legacy went from strength to strength. The committee were delighted to win the Best Community Event award at the My Mirfield Awards ceremony in March last year, just before they were due to host their second family fun day. Their second event went on to raise a staggering £9,450.

Kate said: “The committee are so passionate about raising awareness and funds for Kirkwood, and giving back for what they did for Sarah, Matt and their children. Sarah wanted others to benefit in the same way she did.”

The committee have just held a very successful Masquerade Ball at the Dewsbury Golf Club which raised an amazing £3,137, and are already planning Family Fun Day part three, which is due to be held on Saturday 27th June 2020.

Over the years, Sarah’s family and friends have been able to see their hard work and fundraising efforts climb on their very special Tribute Fund Page, which was lovingly created by Sarah’s son, Josh.

Sarah’s Tribute Fund currently stands at an astonishing £27,995.95 all raised for Kirkwood in her memory. The fundraising total sits alongside beautiful messages and reflections that have been left by those who knew and loved Sarah.

Nikki said: “We are really excited about our third Family Fun Day this year.

“The events we organise are for everybody to enjoy whether they have been supported by Kirkwood or know someone who has. We would love to see the whole community come together with their families and friends for a fun day out and to say thank you to Kirkwood.”

The committee are looking forward to welcoming everyone once again this year, but are still looking for local businesses to help with sponsorship which is £500 to be a main sponsor, and £250 for other opportunities.
