Kirkwood’s Brave Fundraiser

A young girl turns a broken bone into a fundraising marvel – raising £36 for Kirkwood Hospice through cast signings of her broken wrist.

Young Kirkwood supporter, Megan Brierley, has raised £36 for the Hospice after asking friends and family for donations to sign the cast on her arm.

While out roller-skating with her friends a few months ago, nine-year-old Megan from Golcar, tripped and fell over her shoelaces; breaking her wrist.

For four weeks, Megan wore a full pot on her arm – all the way up to her elbow.

After Megan’s Mum, Christine Brierley, had a friend who died in Kirkwood last June, Megan made the decision that she wanted to raise funds in aid of Kirkwood, and came up with a creative way to make money.

Rounding up friends, family, teachers and her little brother, Toby, 8, Megan asked for donations to sign her pot.

Megan, who is very proud of the money she has made, said:

“I wanted to raise money for Kirkwood because my mum had a friend, and she was my friend too, and they looked after her here.

“The cast signing went really well and now a lot of my friends are now copying my idea too.”

Kirkwood Hospice Community Fundraiser, Nicola Barber, feels inspired by Megan’s thoughtful gesture.

She said: “Megan turned her accident into something positive to help raise funds and awareness of the Hospice amongst her friends and family. For this, we cannot express enough how grateful we are.

“If it wasn’t for people like Megan, we wouldn’t be able to continue providing specialist care to our patients and their families in Kirklees.”
