Eighties themed Birthday bash raises mega money!

Hospice Ambassador Andy Wright always goes the extra mile for Kirkwood. As part of his commitment to raise awareness and funds for the Hospice, he is running 5,000 miles in five years. As his 50th Birthday approached, he hung up his trainers for a few days to organise an 80s inspired party to raise funds for the charity.

Mirfield man, Andy Wright, had a busy few days back in January as he prepared for his 50th Birthday party. To celebrate his milestone anniversary, Andy, who is also an ambassador for Kirkwood Hospice, decided to throw an 80s party unlike any other.

And his efforts extended way beyond throwing a great party, with the evening raising a staggering £1,837 for Kirkwood Hospice.

Kirkheaton Parish Church played host to the Birthday bash as keen musician Andy put together an eclectic group of musicians to help guests dance their way through the smash hits of the 80s in style.

“I’ve met a lot of people over the years through playing music and many of them were kind enough to offer to come and play at my 50th.” said Andy.

“I’ve called in a few favours from friends up and down the country and it’s great that they could all come and play a few songs. It’s a great Birthday present for me.”

Guests dressed as Adam Ant, characters from the hit musical Grease and even a Rubik’s Cube danced the night away to hit songs from the decade of legwarmers, spandex and glitter. And they also helped to swell the coffers for Andy’s chosen charity, which is celebrating its 30th year throughout 2017.

“It’s a pleasure to use my 50th celebrations as a way to raise money for Kirkwood. It’s a local charity that does amazing work across Kirklees, helping patients and their families at what is often the most difficult period of their lives.”

In his role as a Kirkwood Ambassador, Andy has also taken on a much bigger task in his quest to raise awareness of the Hospice in the Kirklees community. Back in 2015, he pledged to run 5,000 miles on behalf of Kirkwood Hospice in five years.

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the amazing work the staff there do.” said Andy. It really is the most incredible place. I want to do what I can to support Kirkwood and what I can do is run.”

Kirkwood Community Fundraiser, Lyndsey Richardson, attended the event and was delighted to receive the cheque on behalf of the Hospice.

She said: "For Andy to choose to raise money for us on his birthday is fantastic on top of all the time and effort he is putting into supporting us in both his 5,000 mile challenge and in his role as a Hospice Ambassador."

“We are lucky to have Andy and his family’s support and want to thank him for everything he does.”
