Congratulations to Ian & Simon – Winners of the £750 Lottery Jackpot!

Several years ago, when Ian Hoggard, from Cowlersley, and Simon Tyer, from Heckmondwike, signed up via on-the-door canvases to become members of the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery, they never thought they’d win. But in December and January draws, both Ian and Simon celebrated a big win of the £750 Jackpot prize. Today, Ian & Simon talk to us about their wins and why you too should be a Lottery member.

Why did you become a member of the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery?

Ian: At the time, my wife was a member of another Hospice Lottery. I decided that because my wife was giving to charity, I should too, so I joined the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery. I thought I’d give to somewhere that was a worthwhile cause, which is here.

Simon: I originally come from Halifax and when I moved over here, down at the Brighton Street Working Men’s Club in Heckmondwike, they kept having these charity events on and I kept hearing about this “Kirkwood Hospice". I didn’t have a clue then what it was all about. When they explained to me what Kirkwood Hospice is, I realised what it meant.

I also think part of it might have been that my dad recently died of Cancer. He wasn’t in Kirkwood but he could have really benefitted from the services. I put two and two together and thought this is what I should do, so that’s why I joined the Lottery.

Is this your first win?

Ian: This is the first time I’ve won anything. I’ve done the National Lottery since the very first day it opened, and I have a standing order that goes out every week but I’ve never won anything on that.

How did you feel when your number was called?

Simon: When Dawn rang up to say we’d won £750, I didn’t believe her. I said: “Yeah alright, pull the other one!”

What will you spend your winnings on?

Ian: I’ve got a daughter and two granddaughters over in Canada. For about 10 years now, we’ve been going over there every Summer and Christmas. It costs about £1,000 each time so it’ll pay for at least three quarters of the way there – not quite the way back though!

Simon: We’ve already spent it all on a new oven. Our oven broke just before Christmas so we needed a new one. We were even without an oven for Christmas day!

Finally, what would you say to other people thinking of joining the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery?

Ian: It’s a good charitable thing to do. It’s all run off donations so the more the merrier!

Simon: I’d just say for what it costs, do it, it’s worth it. If you’re working for a living, £1 a week, £4 a month is just nothing. You don’t think twice about it.
