Champagne moment at 1940s event for Kirkwood Hospice
Austerity was cast to the wind last Sunday when Darren and Jackie Brooke hosted their latest afternoon tea party to raise funds for Kirkwood Hospice. After three hugely successful events this summer, over £20,000 has been raised for the Hospice, which provides care for people across Kirklees living with life-limiting conditions.
Ration books were left at the door as over 100 guests turned up in their very best 1940’s threads for the very special war-time themed event.
A giant marquee was set up in the paddock behind Darren and Jackie’s home in Mirfield for the occasion, the third afternoon tea party hosted by the couple this year to raise funds for the Hospice.
The champagne flowed as hungry guests were treated to a vintage spread, before vintage era entertainment had everyone in stitches and tapping their toes.
Comedian Peter Morgan (AKA Max Lemon) brought his unique brand of humour to the party, introducing brand new characters’ to his routine as well as acting as compere extraordinaire for the afternoon.
Among Peter’s latest characters was ‘Champagne Charlie’ an outrageous high society buffoon, who had the audience rolling in the aisles.
Peter’s wife, Jackie Morgan, was cared for at Kirkwood Hospice before she died in 2014 and the money raised across all three summer shows will go to a special Tribute Fund set up in her memory.
Guests were wowed by vintage singer Natasha Harper, who performed a beautiful selection of songs from the era, before voice over artist and vocalist Brandyn Shaw had the audience first in stitches, and then in awe with his unique blend of comedy and songs from the 20s, 30s and 40s.
Despite the grand scale of the 1940s event – which included a vintage Austin Seven motorcar and a dance tent – the entire day was organised and run by Darren, Jackie and Peter, with the generous support of family, friends and volunteers from Kirkwood.
Jackie and Darren said: “We have been delighted to see so many people enjoying our parties and to know the money they have helped to raise will benefit a very worthwhile cause.
“We would like to thank everyone who has bought tickets or donated a prize for the auction and raffle. A big thank you also goes to our family, friends and all of the volunteers that have worked so hard to help to ensure that the event ran so smoothly.”
Kirkwood fundraiser, Lyndsey Richardson, has worked closely with the organisers and was on hand to lend her support on the day. She has been overwhelmed by the commitment of Darren, Jackie and Peter.
Lyndsey said: “Everyone has worked so hard throughout this year on these events. We are so grateful for the wonderful support of Jackie and Darren, who have not only opened their doors to Kirkwood, but also their hearts. Darren Jackie and Peter have given up so much of their time to plan and make sure these events have been such a success.
“Everyone connected with Kirkwood would like to say a huge thank you to them. Their contribution will make a big difference to the care we can provide for the people who rely on our support.”
