Allan and Ethan take part in Light up a Life to remember Tracy Butters

Allan and Ethan Butters will be taking part in our Light up a Life this year to remember their beloved wife and mum, Tracy Butters.

Tracy Butters, who worked at the University of Huddersfield, was supported by our In-Patient Unit team at the end of her life in September 2018.

“Tracy was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and shortly after it became terminal. She was given 12-18 months to live in November 2017 and died in September 2018. From the moment we were told it was terminal, she remained calm and wanted to spend every moment she could gathering memories of our family for our son, Ethan.

“Tracy spent her last days at Kirkwood and from the moment she arrived she told me she was happy. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, she was in the best place she possibly could be. I don’t have one bad memory of Tracy being at Kirkwood. Even though it was the worst time of my life, they made it as bearable as it could be.

“Everyone deserves the dignity of being treated like that, everyone deserves what Kirkwood did for Tracy and our family. Tracy knew it was a privilege to be at Kirkwood, she was so happy there. She died with peace and happiness and that’s all down to Kirkwood.

“Kirkwood have helped me and my son more than they will ever know. We’ve both accessed counselling and the support they have given him has enabled him to talk comfortably and openly about his mum, which is exactly what she would’ve wanted.”

This year, Allan and Ethan are taking part in Light up a Life from home, surrounded by their fond memories as a family together.

"Light up a Life this year will feel quite lonely, I think. With not being able to attend the hospice, the live stream will help. It is a magical time - a very emotional time. Beneath the tree is where we sat, chatting, hugging, kissing and saying how much we loved each other and our amazing son Ethan, as well as our goodbyes.

“So, when I see the tree in the amazing grounds, I think happy thoughts. This year, Ethan and I will again do the things we did when we were all together, like playing a certain film on Christmas Eve.

“Ethan and I miss Tracy each and every day. She was an amazing person, wife, mother, lover, my best friend and most importantly, my soulmate."
