In-Patient Unit Volunteer
Job Description:
Our In-Patient Unit is a place where we strive to provide comfort, compassion, and dignity in a calm and welcoming environment. While the Hospice has a relaxed atmosphere, it is also a clinical setting where important procedures help us deliver safe, high-quality care.
As an In-Patient Unit Volunteer, you will play an important role in supporting our nursing team and helping patients and their loved ones feel cared for and comfortable. Whether you're offering a cup of tea, providing a friendly smile, or helping to keep refreshment areas well stocked, your kindness and support can make a real difference to someone's day.
As an In-Patient Unit Volunteer, you may be asked to:
- Refill patients' water jugs and offer hot and cold drinks to patients and their visitors.
- Spend time chatting with patients and their loved ones when appropriate, offering companionship and a warm, friendly presence.
- Help keep kitchen and refreshment areas well stocked by replenishing cupboards and refrigerators.
- Check the dates of refrigerated items and record fridge temperatures in line with Hospice procedures.
- Help maintain clean, tidy, and welcoming kitchen and refreshment areas.
- Deliver meals to patients when required and accurately complete documentation relating to food intake, following guidance from the nursing team.
- Follow all Hospice policies and procedures, including health and safety, infection prevention, confidentiality, and safeguarding.

Volunteering at The Kirkwood
Volunteering with The Kirkwood is open to people of all ages and backgrounds and the great thing is that a little of your time can make a massive difference to what we can achieve!
Volunteering has been a part of the fabric of The Kirkwood since the idea of a ‘Hospice for Kirklees’ was first conceived over 35 years ago. Over the years, thousands of local people have offered their time and skills as volunteers, and The Kirkwood you see today is a testament to the fantastic contribution they have made.
Everyone associated with The Kirkwood knows only too well the real difference our volunteers make to the running of our services, and it’s true to say we simply couldn’t do it without them!
And don’t forget, it’s not ‘all work and no play'! Volunteering with The Kirkwood gives you the chance to meet new people and make new friends, join in volunteer celebration events and socialise with other members of your team.

The Kirkwood is a local Charity providing specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees living with life limiting illnesses in Kirklees.
We are a team of clinical and medical professionals, fundraisers, chefs, receptionists and cleaners. We are supporters and volunteers. We are patients, carers and families. We are a movement of people motivated by our shared vision to provide the very best care for the people of Kirklees.
