The Kirkwood’s successful Christmas Tree Collection
Over the past few weeks, our band of amazing volunteers have been busy collecting a staggering 1,700 Christmas Trees as part of The Kirkwood’s Christmas Tree Recycling campaign. All the trees we’ve collected are being recycled and put to lots of diffferent uses. And best of all, the campaign raised over £25,000 to help The Kirkwood Support Life here in Kirklees.
There's nothing quite like your very own real Christmas tree. Decorating our trees is a favourite past time for families all across Kirklees, and a great way to spend time with loved ones. However, once the festive season is over many people aren’t quite sure how to get rid of their trees. Each year, The Kirkwood take pride in providing a service, raising money and helping the environment by collecting Christmas trees and recycling them for both individuals and businesses.
As part of this year’s 1,700, we collected some truly special trees from Kirklees Council's retirement villages. Twenty 14ft trees, which had brought in from Germany and supplied by Amethyst Horticulture.
Helen Jackson from Kirklees Council said about the scheme to make the villages more festive: "Our head of Homes and Neighbourhood department Naz Parker wanted to make our retirement living accommodation more festive and so wanted to get them some trees. Lots of the people in these villages do have families which come to visit them at Christmas, Covid restrictions permitting. However quite a few people don't have any family or friends to visit and so it can be quite lonely for them especially around Christmas and so we just wanted to make them feel involved in a project whilst also creating a real festive spirit.
"Where The Kirkwood came into things is when we asked them to collect the trees. The Kirkwood are such a powerful asset to our community and help to support so many people in their lives. My own family have always donated to the charity and so, as a council, we thought this would be a good idea to get The Kirkwood involved and to raise some funds for them at the same time."
Katie Fielding from The Kirkwood’s Fundraising team was delighted to be involved in a record breaking year for our Tree Recycling campaign, and is keen to thank our donors and the amazing volunteers who helped make it all possible.
“Each year, our brilliant volunteers donate their time and efforts to support our Tree Recycling scheme, providing vans, drivers and their labour out of the goodness of their own hearts. I am immensely proud to have been able to be part of this campaign and would like to thank everyone who donated their time, and everyone who signed up for a tree collection to help us raise such an extraordinary amount for The Kirkwood.”
We would like to thank every individual and business for donating to us and letting us take away their trees. We'd also like to thank every volunteer that helped us you:
