“The Kirkwood is the heart of our community”: Samantha Taylor-O’Brien on family, fundraising and Sta

For Samantha Taylor-O’Brien, supporting The Kirkwood is far more than just taking part in events, it’s a deeply personal journey shaped by loss, love and a strong sense of community. What began as a way to give back following a difficult time has grown into a lasting commitment, shared with family and friends year after year.

From volunteering and fundraising to taking on The Kirkwood Starlight Walk, Samantha’s story reflects the powerful connection so many people across Kirklees have with The Kirkwood, and the difference that support makes to patients and their loved ones.

Samantha and her family first became involved with The Kirkwood back in 2013, following the loss of two close relatives. Since then, their dedication has remained unwavering. Samantha said: “We started volunteering with Dee’s Dalton fundraising group in 2013 because we had recently lost our auntie and uncle at The Kirkwood. We have volunteered ever since by doing fundraising events, being elves at Christmas, coffee mornings and more.”

Over the years, Samantha and her loved ones have supported the charity in many ways, but one event in particular holds a special place in their hearts: The Kirkwood Starlight Walk. She commented: “We have completed the walk several times with friends and family. Our five year old little boy Jude completed it last year in the day.”

For Samantha, the walk is about more than just completing the distance, it’s about togetherness, motivation and shared experiences. She continued: “We complete it with family and friends. We always want to compete to complete the longest one.”

The atmosphere on the night is something that continues to inspire her and keep her coming back: “We like that everyone can do it. The atmosphere of everyone being together to complete a mission for The Kirkwood, remembering those who have passed.”

Samantha is passionate about the impact The Kirkwood has across the community, not only for those receiving care but also for their families.

She added: “The Kirkwood is the heart of the Kirklees community because it helps care for so many people in so many ways. Anyone with life-limiting illnesses can benefit from the care that is provided.”

She also highlights the importance of the wider support available throughout every stage of a family’s journey: “Families of patients can also access grief counselling and support before, during and after the death of the patient. Without The Kirkwood, a lot of people would suffer and not get the right amount of care needed, they are vital within our community.”

For Samantha, it all comes back to the strength of the community and the difference people can make when they come together: “When the community comes together to raise funds for The Kirkwood, it feels extra special. If you think you can help by raising your own funds for The Kirkwood, please do, every little helps.”
