The Kirkwood Gardens: Spring update
We're welcoming the first day of Spring with open arms here in the gardens at our main site in Dalton. Here we share an update on what's been happening over the last few months.
As the gardening season fast approaches, we have started preparing for the months ahead and developing a new initiative to support sustainability in the catering department.
We have dedicated a area on site to our brand new Orchard. With currently five fruit trees already planted, and three more to be hopefully introduced in the coming months, the Orchard project is in partnership with our Catering Team to compliment a ground-to-fork initiative.
Offering patients, families and our teams fresh meals with home-grown produce including vegetables, fruit, salads and herbs, will only compliment our ever changing seasonal menu.
The five trees have been very kindly donated by one of our dedicated supporters, who also volunteers with our gardening team.
In the Orchard, we are aiming to plant two blueberry bushes kindly donated by a patient’s relative, along with two gooseberry bushes later in the year.
£100 has also been donated by Friends of The Kirkwood Gardeners towards the planting up of the Orchard. This will be used to buy a further two fruit trees and fruit bushes.
We are delighted to be welcoming back our Volunteer Gardeners soon to help assist with installing a donated greenhouse to allow us to begin growing seeds.
The team are excited to be back tending to our beautiful garden space. Keep an eye out as we continue to share the progress throughout the year!
