Singers and Musicians come together for The Kirkwood

A very special event is to take place at Dewsbury Town Hall on Saturday 13th May in the afternoon. Several local singers and musicians will be putting on a spectacular show of sound from the magic of stage and screen at the old and impressive building in Dewsbury.

The Local Vocals from Ossett, the Grange Moor Brass Band and the Dewsbury Community Choir will all be putting their voices and skills to the test in aid of The Kirkwood.

The community choir which has only been running for the past year has decided to run an annual event to try and raise funds for charity and this year they are doing it for The Kirkwood.

Head organiser Craig Widdop said that the group are excited to perform at the town hall and to raise funds for what they believe is an invaluable and cherished charity.

He said: “I help run Dewsbury community choir and we have been going just over a year now. We have said that every year we want to do one large event to help raise funds for charity. This year we picked The Kirkwood which 95% of people in the choir picked as their charity of choice.

“Last year we did the event at Dewsbury Minster but this year we are doing it at Dewsbury Town Hall, we wanted to get another choir involved and the brass band. So, we will have the Vocal Locals there from Ossett and also the Grange Moor Brass Band performing too. Tickets are £10 and people can come and spend an afternoon in a wonderful building listening to some great music from some of the best films and stage musicals ever.

“We want to see as many people there as possible because all the ticket sales go to The Kirkwood and so we want to raise as many funds as possible for the charity.”

Craig himself has had a personal relationship with The Kirkwood in the past as we cared for his farther in 2006. Due to that experience of how our amazing nurses looked after his dad, Craig has always had huge respect for our charity.

He commented: “I have done fundraising for The Kirkwood in the past because my dad Harold died there in 2006. He went initially for just day relief but went downhill quickly and he eventually died of lung cancer.

“He was seeing the doctors at hospital who couldn’t get him pain free, but the first day he went into The Kirkwood it was a like a miracle because he was pain free. The thing about The Kirkwood is that they look after everything, not just the patient but the patient’s family too and what they need, it is honestly a magical place.

“So, I know how wonderful the care is within the charity and how special the people are that work for The Kirkwood. The group decided that we would have a VIP row at the concert which would be specifically for The Kirkwood staff to enter the event for free.

“The Kirkwood are connected to so many families across Kirklees and it means so much to so many people.”
