Meltham Golf Club Tees Up Support for The Kirkwood

We are delighted to have been chosen as the Charity of the Year by the Captains of Meltham Golf Club. This fantastic show of support means so much to The Kirkwood and reflects the strong community spirit shared between the club and local hospice care.

This year’s captains (2026–2027) — Club Captain Steve Blogg, Lady Captain Carol Walker, Rabbit Captain Dave Kinsey, and Junior Captain Henry Taylor — have come together to champion The Kirkwood and help raise vital funds and awareness for our services.

We sat down with Club Captain Steve Blogg to find out more about why they have chosen The Kirkwood as their Charity of the Year, and to hear more about his role at Meltham Golf Club.

Steve explained the decision to support The Kirkwood, “The reason we de-cided to choose The Kirkwood as Charity of the year is because it is close to many of our members’ hearts, with several families having similar experiences. It’s a local charity doing vital work.”

He added that the decision was also deeply personal, “It’s also very personal for me. My father was cared for by The Kirkwood, and the support he and our family received was exceptional. It allowed him to remain at home, which meant a great deal to us.”

Steve also highlighted the club’s strong community links: “Meltham Golf Club is a big part of the community, with the bar and restaurant open to non-members, regular community events including themed evenings, cabaret nights, and private functions such as weddings and parties, so supporting The Kirkwood felt like the right decision and the obvious choice.”

Turning to his role at the club, Steve explained how his appointment as Club Captain came about, “It’s a role that member are invited to take on, and after some reflection and encouragement from others at the club, I felt it was the right time to accept”

He went on to describe the responsibilities involved “It’s more than an ambassadorial position. The Captain is actively involved in the running of the club and sits on the executive committee, contributing to key decisions and supporting the club’s direction.”

Looking ahead, Steve outlined some of the key priorities for the club, particularly around maintaining the course “A key priority is replacing our ageing irrigation system, which is essential for maintaining the course. It’s a major long-term  investment to protect the course for future generations”

Alongside this, the club is focused on strengthening and developing its long-term income streams. “We are also focused on strengthening income streams, including membership, visiting societies, and hospitality, while ensuring we maintain the club’s core focus on golf and member experience.”

Steve also reflected on membership growth and the club’s future, “We have a strong, loyal membership and encouraging growth in our junior section, which is vital for the future.

We have also seen a rise in women’s golf, with around 100 members. We’re also seeing positive engagement through club events, which is helping attract new members.

We want the club to be seen as a welcoming venue for everyone, not just golfers. That is why we are focused on making the club more accessible and inclusive, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get involved, whether that’s through golf, junior development, or simply enjoying the facilities and events we offer.”

Meltham Golf Club’s support marks a meaningful partnership for the year ahead, bringing together sport and community in support of local hospice care. With the backing of Club Captain Steve Blogg and his fellow captains, The Kirkwood looks forward to working closely with the club to raise vital funds and awareness, helping ensure that hospice care remains there for everyone who needs it, now and in the future.
