Lucky Lottery Player wins Jackpot Prize

Seventy-five-year-old Susan Askey, a retired vicar from Golcar, signed up to the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery two years ago and has been a playing member ever since. In a draw back in November, Susan celebrated her first win as she claimed the £750 top Jackpot prize.

What originally made you sign up to the Kirkwood Hospice Lottery?

As a retired vicar, I used to visit the Hospice quite regularly but it’s nice to come back on a different occasion.

When the canvasser came to sign us up on the door, my husband said ‘we give to charity already’. Then when I heard the man say he was from Kirkwood Hospice, I said ‘oh no Bob this is different, this is Kirkwood Hospice’.

I didn’t hesitate. I know people who have been in here and have found a lot of help. It’s a very important place.

The happy winner, Susan

How did you feel when you heard you’d won?

I couldn’t quite believe it! I’ve never won anything before so I’d never expect it. I feel very lucky.

What will you spend your winnings on?

I’ve bought a new Radley handbag already! I’ve always wanted a big handbag which I could never have justified before. It’s that Yorkshire foil, meaning that you want it but it’s too much money, so you can’t ‘foil’ it. I thought this is my treat.

I’ve also bought a coat for my husband, Bob, and a violin for my grandson. It’s come at a very handy time of year with Christmas presents!
