Local children from Battyford raise over £1000 for The Kirkwood by baking cakes
A group of children aged between 7-12 have raised over £1000 for The Kirkwood over the past two years by producing a brilliant bake sale.
The group who all go to either Brownies, Guides, Cubs or Scouts at Christ for King in Battyford have been putting their Bake Off skills to the test to create delicious cakes and buns for their local community.
Lucy, Tom, Lydia, Violet, Elsie and Layla, Theo, Willow, Isaac, and Eden should be proud of their achievements.
Kirsty Bland, mum of two Lucy and Tom said of the community project: "I work as a nurse practitioner in a GP surgery so I am fully aware of what the great work The Kirkwood do. I come across patients all the time who have accessed their services and so I know how important it is.

"Obviously that work has carried on throughout Covid-19 but I know fundraising opportunities have been low and so I was constantly thinking what could we do to help raise some funds for The Kirkwood.
"Both my children are in uniformed organisations in Mirfield and so whilst doing all their badges they had to do one relating to charities. It was my daughter who asked me if she could raise some money for charity and so I thought let's raise some money for The Kirkwood.
"We managed to raise £800 last year and so this year the kids wanted to do it again. They were really proud of what they had done and had real fun doing it.

"It was good to organise it but I think more importantly it was just a nice thing for the whole community and church to get involved in. We had raffle prizes donated and whilst this year we didn't raise as much just over £600 every penny counts.
"My daughter was so proud when she said we'd raised over £1000 and to me that just says everything about her but also it made me even prouder of her with how excited she was."
Kirsty explained how The children have learnt more about The Kirkwood through this process.
She said: "All the kids have learnt about The Kirkwood services and what the charity does. It wasn’t just about The Kirkwood being there for people who go onto the IPU ward but also learning about all the other services The Kirkwood offers and that's something I'm always constantly pushing with my patients."
