Lloyd’s Banking Group volunteers for The Kirkwood

In a heart-warming show of community spirit, a team from Lloyds Banking Group joined staff at The Kirkwood’s donation centre in November, giving their time and energy to help raise vital funds for local people who rely on the charity’s care.

A group of seven colleagues from Lloyds Banking Group spent a day volunteering at The Kirkwood’s donation centre in November, offering their time and teamwork to support the charity’s vital services across Kirklees.

Kai Hallam from Lloyds said: “We are part of the learning team in Change and Design at Lloyds Banking Group primarily based in Leeds/Halifax.

“Seven people came from the team, volunteering for The Kirkwood was definitely time well spent as it was not just helping out for a good cause but it was an excellent opportunity to team build with one another and connect, it was an engaging day with the opportunity to go across several areas and really develop a strong knowledge of what The Kirkwood do and how it helps the wider communities both through online channels and in store.

“It’s safe to say, all the colleagues that attended thoroughly enjoyed the day, it was a great day and extremely engaging. All colleagues felt as if we made a difference and it was definitely a busy yet productive and insightful day, it was truly a rewarding experience. Knowing the items we sorted and listed throughout the day was going to help those most vulnerable in society was touching.

“It felt great to be a part of the hospice’s incredible mission to raise funds that improve quality of life for people at the end of life as well as providing vital support for family and friends.

“The most surprising thing about the day I think is the sheer size of the building on the inside and the actual scale of operations. It was the most surprising part of it all. How much time, effort and energy goes into keeping The Kirkwood run is truly magical and definitely insightful.

“We would definitely come back to The Kirkwood again and would recommend this to any team, not only at Lloyds but in any organisation or any individual that wants to give back, as it is an amazing opportunity and experience.

“The Kirkwood is valuable as it is not just a hospice, it is a vital, deeply valued part of the Kirklees community. It provides specialist care, emotional and practical support, and a sense of hope and dignity to thousands of local people every year. Its importance is reflected in the breadth of its services, its reliance on community support, and its role as a symbol of compassion and solidarity in Kirklees.

“Overall, on behalf of the entire team, I’d like to say a massive thank you for the day, it was incredibly insightful and the team thoroughly enjoyed the day, we will definitely be returning back! Finally, I’d like to say a massive thank you to The Kirkwood team for facilitating such an amazing day!”

The team spent their volunteering day at The Kirkwood’s busy eBay donation centre, helping staff to sort donated clothing, DVDs and other items ready to be uploaded and sold online. Their support is expected to help raise more than £1,200 for The Kirkwood, contributing directly to patient care and family support.

Beverley Shaw, The Kirkwood’s Business Movement Development Manager, praised the group’s enthusiasm and impact. She said: “Lloyds Bank’s colleagues from Learning, People and Places, joined us recently, using their volunteering making a difference day to support us at The Kirkwood’s eBay donation centre. Pete and Sharon initially attended an open day on site during Hospice Care Week and were so impressed they promoted the opportunity to make a difference to colleagues.

“The team did a variety of activities on site on the day, helping sorting clothes, DVDs and other donated items means we can get stock online faster, reach more customers and ultimately raise more money to support patients and their families. We’re incredibly grateful for their enthusiasm and the skills they’ve brought to the team. The work they did is predicted to raise in excess of £1,200 for the charity which is excellent.”

The Kirkwood relies heavily on the support of volunteers and community partners like Lloyds Banking Group to continue delivering specialist care to people with life limiting illnesses across Kirklees.
