Huddersfield Town Join Forces with The Kirkwood to Tackle Kit Waste
The Kirkwood was proud to welcome Huddersfield Town legend and club ambassador Andy Booth, alongside first-team player Lasse Sørensen, to our Honley shop this week as part of the club’s support for the Green Football’s Great Save campaign.
The visit saw Andy and Lasse hand-deliver a generous donation of pre-loved training wear and football kit, straight from the Terriers’ dressing room. These items will now be sold through The Kirkwood’s shops, helping to raise vital funds for our services across the local community.
The initiative is part of a wider campaign encouraging football fans across the UK to reduce clothing waste by reusing and recycling old sportswear. Huddersfield Town have embraced the cause with open arms, both on and off the pitch.
“We are extremely grateful to Andy and the team at Huddersfield Town for this donation which will raise valuable income through our retail shops to support us here at The Kirkwood,” said Paul Freethy, The Kirkwood’s Head of Retail. “We really appreciate Andy and Lasse for bringing the donation in person to our Honley shop—the staff thoroughly enjoyed the visit.”
Speaking during the visit, Andy Booth reflected on the importance of the campaign: “We’re here today because, unbelievably, 100,000 tonnes of sportswear, football kits, get thrown into landfill every single year, which equates to 500,000 football kits. It’s an unbelievable stat. Huddersfield Town are committed to working hard behind the scenes to become a green EFL football club. We’ve got a working group that work tirelessly, and it’s great that this weekend, at the Mansfield game, it’s our Green Football’s Great Save campaign.
“We’re asking fans to come down wearing your retro shirts, any old shirts you’ve got in the wardrobe, or even this year’s shirt, just bring an old one along. You can donate your kits into the Yorkshire Ambulance recycling bins, the club shop, or even to The Kirkwood charity shop. All proceeds will go to local charities.”
As part of the campaign, Huddersfield Town celebrated Retro Day during Saturday’s match against Mansfield Town. Supporters were encouraged to wear vintage shirts, enjoy retro music in the stadium, and get involved in the green initiative through donation points across the town.
It proved to be a positive weekend all round, as Huddersfield came away with a 2-1 win over Mansfield Town, thanks to goals from Ruben Roosken and Ben Wiles. The result leaves the Terriers sitting 8th in the Sky Bet League One table, just outside the playoff places as they prepare for a crucial clash tonight against 3rd-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

We’re incredibly thankful to Huddersfield Town for their continued support and look forward to seeing more fans making the Great Save by donating their unwanted kits. Together, we can make a real difference—not only to the environment but to the lives of those we support every day.
