Helen’s Story

In Autumn 2020, Helen O’Brien was told she had secondary Breast Cancer, which had spread to her brain after more than a decade of being in remission. 

She was just 40 years old. 

Helen’s brother, Andy, who has recently raised funds for The Kirkwood by taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, said: “Helen was a very bubbly, outgoing person, the life and soul of the party. She really lived life to the full.” 

After her devastating diagnosis, and knowing that she would need palliative care, Helen, who lived with her husband Chris and their son Ben in Almondbury, was determined to remain at home with her family for as long as she possibly could. 

One of  The Kirkwood Nurses visited Helen and her family during her illness, supporting her throughout. In the early stages, The Kirkwood Nurses kept in touch regularly, checking in with Helen’s family and offering practical and emotional support. As Helen’s condition worsened, our nurses visited more frequently, helping her remain comfortable, controlling her pain and being a comforting and friendly presence.

Andy explains; “Helen never wanted to go into a hospice or a hospital, she wanted to be at home if she could, with Chris and Ben. It was The Kirkwood Nurses that were involved with Helen’s care.”

“The communication and care Helen received was excellent, very good. Mum and Dad were very impressed, as was her husband, Chris.”

In April 2021, Helen decided she wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday by going on one last family holiday to Centre Parcs. She was able to make it and share special moments with those she loved. 

Helen died in May 2021, spending her last three days at home surrounded by her loved ones. And in those last three days The Kirkwood Nurses were there, supporting Helen and her family when they needed it most.
