George Takes on the Great Wall for The Kirkwood’s 40th Anniversary

Taking on a once-in-a-lifetime challenge to mark The Kirkwood’s 40th anniversary, George Kitchen from Holmfirth is preparing to trek one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, the Great Wall of China.

The charity challenge will see participants take on a demanding multi-day trek across steep steps, mountainous terrain and historic sections of the Great Wall, all while raising vital funds to support people affected by life limiting illness.

A keen walker with a passion for travel, George has already completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks and trekked through the Andes to Machu Picchu, and regularly hikes in Yorkshire and the Lake District. Now, he’s putting his experience to the test once again, combining his love of travel and outdoors with his commitment to supporting The Kirkwood.

On why he has decided to take part in the trek, George said: ‘Taking on the Great Wall of China trek for The Kirkwood felt like a natural choice for me. I’ve always had a love for travel, walking and new experiences, so the opportunity to take on such an iconic challenge was something I didn’t want to miss.

‘What makes it even more worthwhile is being able to do it in support of The Kirkwood. Raising vital funds, while also helping to spread awareness of the charity, gives the trek a sense of purpose. It’s something I’m proud to be part of.’

When asked what The Kirkwood means to him, George said: ‘The Kirkwood represents support, compassion and care at a time when people need it most. It’s not just about the clinical care provided, but also the emotional support given to both patients and their families.

‘There’s a big sense of community around The Kirkwood, with everyone working towards the same goal, making sure no one has to face a life limiting illness alone.’

He also shared his thoughts on The Kirkwood’s 40th milestone, saying: ‘Reaching 40 years is a fantastic milestone and something the community can be proud of.

‘The Kirkwood has supported so many people over the years, and it’s inspiring to see the difference it continues to make. I’m proud to support the charity and be part of celebrating this achievement, and I hope it continues to do the same for many years to come.’

We’re looking for 40 amazing trekkers to join us on an unforgettable journey across one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, The Great Wall of China.

This is more than a trek. It’s a chance to challenge yourself, make memories that last a lifetime, and raise vital funds to help The Kirkwood continue caring for local people and families when they need it most.
