Fay and Terry receive support from The Kirkwood that helps change their lives

Fay and Terry’s story is one of love, strength, and the compassionate care they’ve received from The Kirkwood. Fay, 73, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2015, while Terry, 80, has been living with Alzheimer’s since 2014. Their journey has taken them through immense challenges, but their bond and support from The Kirkwood have helped them endure.

The couple, who have known each other for over 40 years and been married for 24 of them, faced difficult decisions early on.

Fay explained: “When Terry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, we decided he had to move into a home but he would continue doing all the things he loves, like painting,”

One year later, Fay was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Initially given just 12 months to live, she has remarkably survived for nine years. Fay first connected with The Kirkwood through support courses and drop-in days.

“The Kirkwood was a lifeline,” Fay recalls. “I spent a week in the In-Patient Unit in 2015. The nurses were fantastic I felt so cared for and supported.”

As Fay’s condition progressed, she moved to Abbey House, where she now lives across the corridor from Terry. Despite her own health struggles, Fay continues to benefit from The Kirkwood’s expert care.

“Debs Hanson visits me regularly to check on how I’m doing. The Kirkwood’s knowledge and support gives me confidence,” she says.

Terry, who has always found solace in his art, continues to paint landscapes, a passion that helped them raise funds for hospices in Rugby and Colchester. He said: “There’s no point in sitting and grieving all the time, It’s better to just enjoy what you’re doing and it keeps my mind active.”

Their separation during the COVID-19 pandemic was especially difficult, with two years apart and only phone calls to stay connected. Moving into Abbey House together was a huge relief.

“It’s a good job I moved here because I’ve since had a stroke and now rely on oxygen. The Kirkwood is important because it offers the specialised care that makes all the difference,” Fay says.

Their story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the support from dedicated palliative care.
