Elaine’s Get Together for The Kirkwood

On Saturday 11th September, Elaine Holroyd held The Bobtown Get Together event to help The Kirkwood Support Life right here in Kirklees.

Held in the beautiful building of Roberttown Community Centre, The Bobtown Get Together proved a huge success.

Hundreds of people turned out to support Elaine in her efforts to raise funds for The Kirkwood, whilst also enjoying lots of fun activities the whole family could get involved in.

Elaine said: "The day was so special because it raised vital funds and gave something back to the people who helped me and many others suffering from life threatening diseases.

"The Kirkwood are not just here to help you die, they are here to help you live and cope with cancer and various other long-term illnesses."

Elaine and four family members also bravely took part in a head shave as part of the event, helping to boost funds on the day. It was an emotional moment for the family and everyone who was there to witness it.

Elaine added: "We did a similar thing seven years ago when I was first diagnosed with cancer. We raised £5,500 for Cancer Research. However this time we are looking to raise funds for The Kirkwood and overall I would like to raise £6,000. This time my three sisters, my brother, nephew and son are all doing it.”

Elaine is currently accessing support from The Kirkwood, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2019.

Despite her diagnosis, Elaine has remained positive, putting her efforts into giving back to the charity helping her – and her first event went brilliantly. The hall was full of delicious cakes, buns and sweets, there was a virtual dog show to vote in. People could try their luck on a tombola stall where some amazing prizes were to be won and children could have their face painted, it was a fun filled day for all the family to enjoy.

The event also helped to spread the word in the Roberttown area about the work The Kirkwood do across Kirklees.

Elaine is so pleased she moved to this little corner of Kirklees a few years ago. She said: "I'd just like to thank everyone for supporting the event, all the local shops and businesses who have got involved. Neighbours and friends too.

"We could not have done this without everyone's help, I think The Kirkwood have touched nearly everyone's lives in this community. People have been so generous which is lovely to see.

"Roberttown is a great place to live in, it's got a wonderful community of people. I'm so glad we moved here three years ago, I couldn’t have asked to live in a better place at this time in my life."
