Cleckheaton Firefighter Damian Cameron raising funds for The Kirkwood

Cleckheaton firefighter Damian Cameron is on a journey to raise £2,500 for The Kirkwood after they cared for his colleague Mat Wood who died in 2015.

Back in April we introduced you to Cleckheaton firefighter Damian Cameron who is raising money for us. One of Damian's colleagues Matt Wood died in 2015 aged 44 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Matt received care at home by The Kirkwood Nurses, helping him to deal with pain management, he was also a daily visitor to The Kirkwood centre in Huddersfield. He was then admitted into the In-Patient Unit near to the end of his life.

Now Damian is looking to beat a target of £2.500 to raise money in memory of Mat. Having entered this year's London Marathon in October, Damian and the other firefighters are holding various events across this year to raise money.

The first of these events took place on July 3rd as Damian and his colleagues washed cars at the fire station in Cleckheaton. They managed to raise £900 on the day and that was despite the torrential rain which was a magnificent effort. That £900 will be split between The Kirkwood and The Firefighters charity.

At the event Damian said: "It's great we have been able to hold this event. This is stage two of our fundraising efforts for The Kirkwood. We can't thank them enough for how they cared for Mat and his family.

“The Kirkwood is an essential service. It’s important to have the end of life care that they provide. I think the vast majority of us will have people in our families that will need them."

Damian is planning to complete a bike ride from Cleckheaton to the east coast to raise more money and to also host a family day at the station itself.

So far Damian has raised £860 for The Kirkwood. You can keep up to date with Damian's training and fundraising on his Virgin Money Giving page by clicking here.
