Brian Robinson Challenge Ride Returns Pedalling for The Kirkwood
After a short hiatus, the much-loved Brian Robinson Challenge Ride is back and this year, it’s riding with renewed purpose. The event, long known for raising thousands of pounds for charitable causes, will now focus its fundraising efforts on supporting The Kirkwood, a local charity delivering outstanding care for those affected by life limiting illnesses based in Kirklees.
Returning for 2025, the ride is being reignited by event organiser Martyn Bolt, a local cyclist and dedicated fundraiser. Inspired by a deeply personal connection to The Kirkwood and aware of the charity’s recent financial challenges, he is committed to helping make a difference through this year’s ride.
“Having seen at first hand the dedication and care provided by the Kirkwood I felt I wanted to help them continue providing that much needed love and attention”
Starting and finishing at Huddersfield Rugby Union Club in Lockwood, the challenging 77 mile circuit will once again bring riders together in celebration of community, endurance, and local pride. Cyclists will pass through some of the most scenic towns and villages in the Huddersfield area, including Meltham, Marsden, Holmfirth, Emley, Upper Hopton, Flockton, Scissett, and Denby Dale, weaving through a landscape that is as inspiring as the cause itself.
A highlight of the route is the iconic climb of Holme Moss, a true test of stamina and a celebrated feature of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ. This climb, was one which the late Brian Robinson considered “his “climb having trained on it in his youth and often riding it at least once a year in his retirement.
The event pays tribute to cycling legend Brian Robinson, the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour de France. Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, Brian was a trailblazer in British cycling and played a pivotal role in bringing the Tour to Yorkshire in 2014. He sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 91, but his legacy lives on in this annual challenge that bears his name.
First held in 2007, the Brian Robinson Challenge Ride has attracted riders from across the UK and grown to become a highlight in the cycling calendar.
All proceeds from the ride will go toward supporting The Kirkwood’s invaluable work, helping patients and families across the region at some of life’s most challenging moments. While rider entries contribute directly, participants are encouraged to raise additional funds or make personal donations if they’re able.
On the challenge community fundraiser Judith Ambler commented: “The Brian Robinson Challenge Ride has always been a special event, but this year it takes on an even greater meaning. Supporting The Kirkwood means supporting families across our community when they need it most. It’s incredibly moving to see cyclists coming together not just for the love of the ride, but to make a real difference. I’m proud to be part of something that celebrates resilience, honours Brian’s legacy, and helps fund such vital care.”
With its rich heritage, beautiful route, and new fundraising focus, the 2025 Brian Robinson Challenge Ride is more than just a cycling event, it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and care!
