ASDA Team Lends a Helping Hand at The Kirkwood’s eBay Sands Mill Site
A dedicated team of ten ASDA colleagues recently volunteered at The Kirkwood’s eBay Sands Mill site in Mirfield, giving their time to support the charity’s vital work.
The group spent the day sorting and organising donated stock, gaining first hand insight into how the charity turns preloved items into essential funds for people in Kirklees living with life limiting illnesses.
Their visit formed part of ASDA’s commitment to supporting local communities, and the team were keen to use their volunteer days to make a tangible difference.
Technical Manager Alex Norton explained that the experience left a big impression on everyone involved, and that the group “had a great day helping out, everyone found the experience really worthwhile and would love to come back next year!”
Alex said there were many reasons the team felt their time was well spent, sharing that “We felt very fortunate to help out and spend time making a difference. You all made us feel very welcome and were very clear on the jobs we were helping with.” Seeing first hand how their efforts support local people in need made the day even more meaningful. “We learnt that we are all very spoilt and lucky to have our health! It puts our lives into perspective and we all want to help out more.”
The group were also surprised by the scale of work involved behind the scenes. “Just the amount of work that goes into selling and organising all the stock. You are the real heroes,” Alex said. Inspired by what they experienced, he added, “I would openly encourage all ASDA colleagues to get involved and help out. I have spread the word.”

Reflecting on The Kirkwood’s wider impact, Alex emphasised how essential the charity is locally: “The Kirkwood is extremely important you are vital for helping the community out. I think the day made that more apparent to all of us, we massively appreciate the work you do.” He also expressed the team’s gratitude, saying, “Just to say a massive thank you for having us and we would love to come back again next year!”
Beverley Shaw, The Kirkwood’s Business Movement Development Manager, praised the group’s enthusiasm and hard work: “Asda’s fantastic team have really rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in at The Kirkwood’s eBay donation centre, using their volunteer days to sort through clothes, DVDs and a whole range of generous donations. Their support helps us turn every bag of donated goods into vital funds and shows just how powerful it is when local businesses give their time to our charity. We’re so thankful for their ongoing commitment to The Kirkwood.”
