Annual Charity Golf Day Raises Thousands for The Kirkwood

The annual Bradley Park Golf Course charity golf day has raised a fantastic £8,350 for The Kirkwood this year. Organised by Martin Folan, this yearly event has now raised over £100,000 in total for the Kirklees based charity.

Martin Folan of Bradley Park Golf Course has been supporting The Kirkwood through an annual golf day for nearly two decades. Every year, Martin’s popular Charity Golf Day, kindly sponsored by Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors, welcomes teams from all around Kirklees to take part in a day of golf and fundraising in aid of The Kirkwood.

On Saturday 15th of June, 30 teams of golfers took to the slightly rainy fairways to enjoy a day of golf, raising an amazing £8,350 for the local charity, which supports people affected by any life limiting illness across Kirklees.

This year’s event was in memory of two special people, who were both cared for by The Kirkwood, Michael Kay “Chippy” and Stephen Jones were lifetime friends to Martin and many of the golfers taking part and are sadly missed.

Martin started raising funds for The Kirkwood in 2006 when he had the fantastic idea to turn his love for golf into a fundraiser in memory of his sister, Bridie Foster and brother-in-law, Kevin Foster who spent their final days on The Kirkwood’s In-Patient Unit.

Kevin sadly died in 2004 aged just 42, and Martin’s sister, Bridie, died the following year aged 53.

Despite the wet weather, the day was a huge success and was enjoyed by everyone who attended, especially the winning team Wilde Rover’s

At the end of the day, all of the players and their families were invited to join Martin for an evening of entertainment and fundraising back in the clubhouse, with live music from local band The Rouges.

Martin said: “The golf day does take a lot of organising and work beforehand, but the compliments and positive feedback out ways it all by far.

“We have a great team ethos which works brilliantly. From the Kirkwood team to all our volunteers. We haven't just created a golf day we have created a social event. We have golfers of all abilities come and take part, to support a great cause. I am proud to be part of such a day and especially part of the fantastic people who support The Kirkwood.

Beverley Shaw, The Kirkwood’s Business Development Manager said: “I have worked with Martin Folan for a number of years and his passion for supporting The Kirkwood is immense. This year it was great to see the ongoing support of existing golfers and sponsors, together with some new ones.

“Over the years, Martin has raised a significant amount of funds for The Kirkwood and I am always genuinely excited when the charity golf date arrives in the calendar.

We would like to thank everyone who supported the event both on the day and by donating prizes. Special mention to our Business Movement Member, Chadwick Lawrence for sponsoring the event, hole sponsors, Heat Pump Installers (HPI), Jaf Builders, Huddersfield Hospital, Baimbridge Flooring Ltd and Broddy’s Transport, as well as Fox Engravers who provided the winners medals and trophy and Tom Wilde, the professional golfer at Bradley Park Golf Club, and finally, Tina Folan and the team at the Club House.
