Andrew Townsend takes on climbing challenge for The Kirkwood

The Kirkwood always loves to hear from those people that are fundraising for us and taking on a challenge in the name of The Kirkwood to raise funds to help us Support Life.

Andrew Townsend is taking on a huge challenge in September climbing up Mera Peak in the Nepalese Himalayas. At over 6,400 metres high the trek will be a serious challenge for Andrew and one which will take him 15 days to complete.

Andrew is looking to raise funds for us in memory of his mother Elizabeth Townsend who The Kirkwood cared for in 1998. Elizabeth died at the age of 48 after living with cancer.

On The Kirkwood's care for his mum and the challenge he is taking on Andrew said: “My Mum was cared for by The Kirkwood in 1998 aged 48 when she was suffering with her 6th and ultimately final diagnosis of cancer.

“Although this was a long time ago and I was only 16 at the time, I do remember how wonderful the staff were and I had some counseling sessions with a member of the team after my mum's death which helped.

“I do remember the counselor made me feel like I could open up, she said it was ok to feel like I was feeling. The hospice will always hold a special place in my heart after seeing and receiving such amazing care. I think it's vital The Kirkwood is kept well funded so they can keep up the high standards of care they provide.”

On his challenge to raise funds he added: “I'm climbing Mera Peak in the Nepalese Himalayas, standing at 6,476 meters high. It's a serious mountain and will take around 15 days to reach the summit. I absolutely love being in the mountains and feel close to my mum when I'm high up near the sky. She will be at the forefront of my thoughts when it gets tough.

“My challenge is completely self funded including all kit etc and will take place from 21st September 2024 to 11th October 2024 any help and support would be greatly appreciated through donations via my page.”

Wanting to thank Andrew and wish him good luck on his challenge our community fundraiser Judith Ambler said: “It has been great to speak with Andrew and hear why he wants to fundraise for us. Everyone with The Kirkwood wishes him all the best of luck on his challenge and we look forward to seeing him back in West Yorkshire on lower ground very soon.”
