A heartfelt message to The Kirkwood Nurses on International Nurses’ Day 2021
As the world comes together to celebrate the amazing achievements of our nursing community, our Director of Clinical Services, Sarah Shaw, shares a heartfelt message of thanks for our hardworking nurses.
International Nurses’ Day 2021 is a day like no other. Fourteen months on from the first lockdown here in the UK, and despite the promise of restrictions being eased in the coming months, our team of dedicated, hardworking nurses continue to do everything they can to keep our patients and their families safe, going above and beyond to protect those in our care.
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, The Kirkwood have been standing side by side with our NHS colleagues, providing vital care for the most vulnerable patients and families across Kirklees. This International Nurses’ Day, we want to say a big thank you to The Kirkwood Nurses.

Sarah Shaw, Director of Clinical Services with The Kirkwood is full of admiration for her colleagues, who have remained steadfast in their commitment, despite the many challenges posed by the pandemic.
Sarah said: “Every year we mark the fantastic work The Kirkwood Nurses make to improve the quality of life for our patients and say thank you for their contribution to the nursing profession generally.
“This year, International Nurses’ Day is even more poignant as we reflect on a year that has challenged nurses and the nursing profession worldwide in ways we could never have imagined.
“So today I would like to thank my nurses for their dedication, their resilience, care and commitment to our patients and families throughout the pandemic. I am very proud of them all.”
Over the past year, our nurses have played a huge part in helping to adapt our services to keep those in our care safe; offering virtual consultations and wellbeing sessions, visiting the most vulnerable people at home when needed and continuing to offer the very best, round-the-clock care on our In-Patient Unit despite the restrictions in place.

With our patients among the most vulnerable in our community, our nurses continue to do everything they can to protect those in their care them from the impact of coronavirus and help those at the very end of life to make the most of the time they have left.
The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound effect the entire nursing community over the past year, with unprecedented challenges continuing to test the resilience of those in patient-facing roles. Sarah also reserved praise for their dedication.
“I would also like to thank our nursing colleagues across Kirklees who we have worked alongside during the pandemic, as well as those further afield – both here and abroad.”
