In 1981, an inspiring journey toward compassionate care for individuals with life limiting illnesses in Huddersfield began when a group of dedicated people came together with a vision to establish a hospice for the town. That vision, sparked over thirty eight years ago, transformed into a reality in 1987 with the opening of The Kirkwood. Now we are asking for your help with regular donations to help The Kirkwood continue to care for people across Kirklees.

Since 1987, The Kirkwood has supported thousands of people across Kirklees with life limiting illnesses. Our services have expanded significantly over the years, with our Dalton location now offering a 16-bed In Patient Unit designed to provide the highest level of comfort and care beyond our facilities, The Kirkwood's dedicated team reaches into every town and village across Kirklees, ensuring comprehensive support for our entire community is given to those people that need it most.

There is often confusion about which charities provide services for local people living with life limiting illnesses at home. While charities like Macmillan play a crucial role, it's important to know that right here in Kirklees, it's our Nurses from The Kirkwood who deliver specialist palliative care to patients in their homes and care homes.

Our extensive community services include the "Connect with The Kirkwood" helpline, which offers advice and support, and specialised bereavement services to help families and friends cope with death.

This vast network of compassionate care comes with significant costs. What started with a modest £4,50 raised at our first meeting now requires an annual budget of £9 million to operate The Kirkwood, that's £28,000 each day.

While we receive some government funding, the majority of our financial support comes from the generosity of our community through fundraising events, donations, and our lottery.

One powerful way to help sustain The Kirkwood’s future is through a regular monthly donation. Contributions of any size make a profound impact, allowing us to plan for our patients' needs, invest in new technologies, and explore innovative ways to enhance our community care.

Just £5 a month can provide a patient experiencing breathlessness with a hand held fan, offering immediate comfort. A contribution of £10 a month can supply a memory box for a patient’s family, a meaningful keepsake that brings solace during difficult times. These contributions, both big and small, are essential to sustaining the compassionate, high quality care The Kirkwood provides at both our Dalton site and across Kirklees.
