Location: The Kirkwood Dalton site Department: In-Patient Unit
Reports to: In-Patient Unit Nursing Team and Therapy Team
Minimum time commitment: Regular weekly shifts are available as outlined below. We also welcome volunteers who could provide ad-hoc support during absences.
Monday to Sunday:
09.30am to 11.30am 12noon to 1.30pm
2.30pm to 4.30pm
6pm to 7.30pm
Accountable to: In-Patient Unit Nursing Team, Therapy Team, and the Volunteer Service Team Leader
Job Description:
The role of the volunteer at The Kirkwood is key to forming an exceptional provision to our service users at The Kirkwood. The Kirkwood has many roles in which we rely on our volunteers to provide. Working alongside the Fundraising team to promote the charity and interact with supporters.
We aim to adopt a calm, relaxed approach on the In-Patient Unit and although the Hospice is not a hospital, it is a medical centre and therefore procedures need to be followed.
The role involves supporting nursing staff to provide the best quality of care to our patients and their visitors by providing refreshments and engagement, where appropriate.
Role requirements: Replenishing patients water jugs; offering and making drinks for patients and their visitors
Engaging with patients and their visitors, if appropriate
Replenishing stock in the kitchen diner cupboards/fridges when necessary
Check dates on items in the fridge and record the temperature
General cleaning/tidying of kitchen and refreshment areas
Take meals to patients as required and the completion of documentation re the amount of food eaten by patients

Volunteering with The Kirkwood: As a volunteer, you will need to maintain complete confidentiality as a condition of your volunteering.
Information relating to patients, visitors, team members and fellow volunteers can only be, disclosed with the express permission of the appropriate manager.
All volunteers and staff have a responsibility to maintain a safe working environment following The Kirkwood Fire and Health & Safety policies. All volunteers are required to work within the policy guidelines of The Kirkwood.
Volunteering for The Kirkwood is subject to satisfactory references such as; health declaration, role-specific assessment, and where appropriate a DBS Disclosure.
Before or shortly after starting, all volunteers will be invited to attend an induction session. In the first few weeks, volunteers undertake role-specific shadowing and training, and complete the following training modules (assistance being provided if required):
To keep up-to-date with requirements and legislation in these areas, it may be necessary to refresh this training from time to time.

The Kirkwood provides specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees with advanced, progressive illnesses at any time from diagnosis to the end of life, respecting their individual needs and wishes.
Care and support are also provided for their family members, friends, and carers, both during the illness and after death. Through education, training, and partnership with others, we improve care for everyone affected by a life-limiting illness.
