Response to the government’s Hospice funding announcement
We welcome the government's recent announcement of a £100 million funding package to support Hospices across England. The news of additional support comes at a time when our finances are being stretched like never before.
Whilst we await the details of funding following the news, the financial package will potentially help to fund significant items of expenditure over the next two years, such as improving buildings, patient accommodation, and equipment.
The announcement is a positive one, which recognises the importance of the Hospice movement in delivering good palliative and end of life care for people in this country. We'd like to thank the UK Government for listening to the concerns of hospices and Hospice UK for advocating on our behalf. However, with the majority of the money available to hospices set to be ringfenced for capital spending, it is unlikely we will be able to be use any financial support we receive to fund our day-to-day running costs.
We will do all we can to secure a share of the funding for The Kirkwood, but with the cost of providing care for the people of Kirklees continuing to rise rapidly, without additional help to support our day-to-day running costs, we will continue to face a challenging future.
We will continue to lobby the government for a better balance between statutory (government) and voluntary income, and we will work with our healthcare partners at both a local and regional level to press for a more sustainable long term solution to our funding challenges in both the short and longer term.
