Oliver’s Big Game for The Kirkwood 5th July 2025

Local fundraiser Oliver Watson is calling on the community to come together once again in support of a cause close to his heart, as his annual charity football match returns to Liversedge FC’s home ground on Sunday 6th July 2025.

Now in its fourth year, the event has already raised an impressive £16,000 for The Kirkwood, the local charity that provides vital care and support for those affected by life-limiting illnesses. What began as a tribute to Oliver’s late mum, Suzanne Watson, has grown into a well-loved fixture in the community calendar, and this year’s match promises to be the biggest and best yet.

“Since starting the charity football match in 2021, we’ve held three games so far, with the last two taking place at Liversedge FC, who’ve been incredibly supportive,” said Oliver. “We’re now preparing for our fourth match on 5th July 2025, once again at their home ground, and I’m so proud to say we’ve now raised a total of £16,000 for The Kirkwood.

“This all began as a way to honour my mum’s memory and to give something back to the incredible team with The Kirkwood who cared for her during her illness. I never imagined it would grow into such a meaningful annual event, bringing together friends, family, and local supporters, all united by a shared cause. Every pound raised helps The Kirkwood continue providing care and support to families going through the toughest times, and that means the world to me.

“I’m really grateful to everyone who’s played, donated, or come along to cheer us on, you’ve helped turn something personal into something powerful. I can't wait to see how much we raise from this years event.””

The matches have become a powerful example of what community spirit can achieve. Each year, players of all abilities take to the pitch not just for the love of football, but to make a difference.

Julia Owen, Community Fundraiser with The Kirkwood, praised Oliver’s dedication:

She said: “Oliver’s dedication over the past four years has been nothing short of inspiring. What began as a personal tribute to his mum has become a major community event that brings people together while raising vital funds for our care. To have raised £16,000 through his football matches is an incredible achievement, and we’re so proud to have him as part of The Kirkwood family. His passion, energy, and commitment truly make a difference to the patients and families we support every day.”

With kick-off set for Sunday 5th July, the upcoming match is shaping up to be a celebration of sport, remembrance, and community generosity. Whether you’re a football fan, a friend of The Kirkwood, or simply someone looking for a fun day out while supporting a meaningful cause, everyone is welcome.

So mark the date, grab your friends and family, and head down to Liversedge FC to support Oliver and The Kirkwood in what promises to be another unforgettable day.
