Creative with Purpose: Martin Kemp, Wodehouse Direct and The Kirkwood
At the heart of West Yorkshire’s creative and marketing landscape is Wodehouse Direct, a well established business that has been delivering high quality design and direct mail services since 2003. The brainchild of Martin Kemp, Wodehouse Direct boasts a rich and varied portfolio that spans everything from heavy engineering to the health and leisure sectors. Yet, it’s their unique specialism in the charity sector, often driven by referrals that sets them apart.
Martin's passion for design and communication is evident in every aspect of the business. Wodehouse Direct offers a full spectrum of creative services, including graphic design for an impressive range of end products: “One day we might be designing an annual report or a direct mail pack; the next, we could be creating a website or billboard,” Martin shares. “No two days are the same, and that’s just how we like it.”
The name Wodehouse Direct carries with it a nod to both tradition and creativity, reflecting a business rooted in solid experience while always looking forward with flair and imagination.
While many companies seek to differentiate themselves from the competition, Martin and his team at Wodehouse take a different view: “We don’t really feel we have competition, we don’t compare ourselves to others. Every brief is completely bespoke. It’s about meeting the client’s needs, fitting the budget, and understanding the audience. That’s our focus.”
This tailored approach, combined with a constant awareness of emerging design trends and techniques, ensures Wodehouse remains fresh, relevant, and responsive.
A good working day for Martin is full of collaboration and creativity: “It usually starts with a chat in the studio about the best approach to a project. There’s the usual paperwork, client meetings, deliveries, and often a Zoom call or two thrown in for good measure.” It’s this blend of practicality and passion that fuels Wodehouse’s continued success.
The team’s motivation? A commitment to quality and a genuine love for their craft: “We don’t see design as a nine to five job, it’s a vocation. Everyone here is passionate about delivering work we’re proud of.”
Wodehouse Direct’s involvement in The Kirkwood Business Movement speaks volumes about its values: “Supporting charitable causes is woven into everything we do. Everyone on our team has experienced the incredible, selfless work of a hospice at some point. Being able to give back through our business is incredibly meaningful.”
When he's not immersed in creative work, Martin’s found on the trails. As a qualified mountain leader, hiking is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life. His ideal weekend involves leading walks in the hills, capturing stunning views, enjoying a well earned pint, and sharing a moment with a friendly dog along the way.
Martin also has a couple of ambitious goals left on his bucket list: “I’d love to hike the entire coast of the United Kingdom and I’m planning to run the Pennine Way next year in aid of charity.” His adventurous spirit certainly matches his creative one.
Wodehouse keeps its followers engaged on LinkedIn, where Martin regularly posts about design, efficient working practices, and even his countryside escapades. On Facebook, you can find him at @viewsoftheworld. And when it comes to emojis? The classic smiley, LOL, and sunshine icons get the most mileage.
From the drawing board to the mountaintop, Martin Kemp and Wodehouse Direct embody creativity, compassion, and commitment. As a proud member of The Kirkwood Business Movement, Martin is proof that good design, and good business, can truly make a difference.
