Getting to Know… John Johnson
For the latest edition of Getting to Know, we find out more about John Johnson, Kirkwood Hospice's Volunteer Services Manager.
What is your role?
Volunteer Services Manager
How would you sum it up in one sentence?
I’m responsible for recruiting, placing and managing volunteers for the Hospice.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
This may seem soppy, but after all these years, I’d be in trouble if I didn’t
say being married.
What would you say you are best at?
I like to try out new ideas and approaches. In my personal life, I’m a bit of a dab hand at DIY.
What is the most important aspect of your work?
Making myself available to support our volunteers wherever they’re working. Every volunteer should know how much we value their help and support and what a real difference they’re making!
Where is your favourite place?
I often visit Ireland, where I was born, so I’ll go with that.
What is the best thing about your role?
I really enjoy meeting different people. What’s really nice is how willing the public are to help the Hospice.
What is your greatest achievement?
This is more of an experience, but when working in local government, I had the privilege of supporting refugees fleeing the conflict in Kosovo. Playing a small part in helping families to rebuild their lives brought me a great deal of personal satisfaction.
What is your greatest fear?
A global shortage of chocolate and sweets.
What would you change about your life?
If someone had told me that eating healthily was important for normal growth, I’d probably be a few inches taller!
How do you relax?
Usually by spending time with family and friends. If the mood takes me, I take to my bike and go for a long ride to clear my head.
Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people will know
I can touch my nose with my tongue. It’s my party piece, but it’s probably getting a bit old now!
